Your driver-guide will take you on a brief town tour to share stories of life on this island paradise, en route to the marina where you will board a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) ideally suited for viewing marine life. During the coastal cruise that follows, the captain will point out places of interest, offer a historical perspective of Kangaroo Island, and bring you as close as possible to a variety of marine creatures. Learn about this vast eco system with very informative commentary from your local expert.

You can expect to see New Zealand fur seals frolicking in the water or resting on the rocky shore. Another species of interest that remains endangered is the Australian sea lion. You might also spot bottlenose dolphins, which tend to travel in pods close to the shore, often with calves swimming alongside their mothers. Don't be surprised if they approach the boat for a closer look at you looking at them.

Of course, be sure to scan the sky for sea birds. White-bellied sea eagles are commonly spotted plucking fish out of the water and then feasting on them along the shore.

Constructed with locally quarried granite and limestone in 1852, it was the first lighthouse built in South Australia, and it played a vital role in helping ships navigate the treacherous stretch of sea known as Backstairs Passage.

From here you will be treated to spectacular views of the sea and coast and perhaps spot kangaroos, which are frequently seen on this part of the peninsula.

You'll have approximately 1 1/2-hours to watch and photograph these furry creatures basking in the sun and frolicking in the water.

A different sort of natural attraction awaits you at the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, a throwback to the days when distilling eucalyptus oil was one of Kangaroo Island's chief industries. While at the factory and shops, you'll watch a video presentation and commentary from the local masters, and have time to browse for a variety of local products scented with eucalyptus.

Explore picturesque Kingscote, a heritage town with a thriving arts community and the first European settlement in the state of South Australia. Established at nearby Reeves Point in 1836, Kingscote remains relatively undeveloped, due in part to its remote location. That is the beauty of this seaside town and the surrounding area, where nature reigns supreme. On the way to town, you will pause at gorgeous Penneshaw Bay and Pelican Lagoon; the latter known for its free-roaming kangaroos, wallabies and of course pelicans. While meandering about Kingscote on your own, you might browse the art galleries, admire the enormous kangaroo mural painted on a downtown silo and shop for hand-crafted jewelry. Many of the stores also carry products made with organic honey from imported, genetically pure Ligurian bees. Later, you will visit the Island Beehive, the source of this revered raw honey that is used in everything from mead to beauty products.
