Drive through the Addo Elephant Park, an unspoiled nature reserve teeming with wildlife. Settle in for an approximately 75-minute journey north across the Swartkops River to Addo Elephant Park, a spectacular nature reserve that stands as living proof of the success of South Africa’s conservation efforts. During your approximately two-hour game drive, you’ll hear that when the park was founded in 1931, it housed a paltry population of 11 elephants, which over time has ballooned to over 450 individuals.
From your coach, catch sight of the park’s namesake elephants, a somewhat smaller species of the African elephant, and notice that they are reddish rather than the more common gray. You’ll gather that they are highly intelligent creatures that communicate through vocalization, touching with their trunks and various body postures. Learn that the park’s five biomes, from grassland to montane forest, support an enormous diversity of other animals, including black rhino, lions, antelopes, spotted hyenas, zebras and warthogs as well as a wide variety of birds, including the world’s largest Cape gannet breeding population. On this unforgettable excursion, you’ll applaud the successful protection of the remarkable Addo elephant.
Note: This tour is panoramic in nature with very limited walking. It is available to guests who utilize a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. There will be comfort stops upon entering and exiting the park. Wildlife sightings, while likely, are not guaranteed. Weather appropriate clothing; sunglasses; binoculars; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. less

Cruise Seyðisfjörður’s namesake fjord through some of the most extraordinary countryside in east Iceland, stopping along the way to observe the natural beauty and wildlife. The fjord is more than 10 miles long and couldn’t be more photogenic. While you will see the remains of the now-abandoned fishing village of Brimnes and a lone farm here and there, most of the scenery will be undeveloped and uninhabited. You can expect to pass thundering waterfalls spilling over the cliffs that line the fjord and forests blanketing the distant mountains.
During a stop at Dwarf’s Rock, you will hear the legend of how this oddly shaped pointed boulder came to rest at its present location. The area is a breeding ground for black-legged kittiwakes, a coastal bird that nests on steep cliffs. Puffins are even more common, and you can expect to see hundreds of them nesting among the huge colony of seabirds at Skálene cliff.
Note: This tour includes approximately 20 minutes of walking to/from the boat. Participants should be able to navigate 5 steps to board the boat, there is no restroom available. It is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Casual, weather-appropriate, warm layered clothing and comfortable, flat, non-slippery walking shoes are suggested. less

Tour some townships where resistance to apartheid was particularly strong in the 1960s and 1970s, and see how they have since flourished artistically and culturally. Receive an insight into the local African culture like no other you have ever experienced, and in doing so, will contribute to the economic upliftment so vital for the people of South Africa.
Drive through downtown Port Elizabeth, once a hotbed of political and social resistance to apartheid. As you continue through its neighboring townships, you will notice the vast differences in the residential areas, such as poor, undeveloped Missionvale and middle-class Kwadwesi. Your guide will point out a number of landmarks along the way, including the Native Strangers Location, Livingstone Hospital, and Lithuli Square, which is named for the political activist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for his non-violent opposition to apartheid.
Stop for photos at a viewpoint in Kwa Magxaki before proceeding on through several other townships. Stopping in Rhamaphosa Village, a squatter camp, you will enjoy a visit to the community’s Arts and Crafts Center. Several styles of artwork are on display and for sale, all of them deeply personal to the local artists. Some of the subject matter may reflect the legacy of apartheid and how the people have struggled in this part of South Africa.
Drive by Emlotheni Memorial Park, which commemorates the death of six men who were executed in 1964 for defiantly resisting apartheid forces. Then, visit a local school or community center, where you’ll be served some refreshments and have the opportunity to interact with local community members and possibly some school children.
Note: This tour is mostly panoramic in nature with limited optional walking at any stops made. Tour is conducted in small coaches which cannot accommodate wheel chairs. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Only local currency (South African Rand) is accepted in the crafts building and there is no shipping. The toilet facilities are very basic.
