Walk through a tunnel once used for gold mining to watch a demonstration of traditional mining techniques, after which you may pan for gold and browse mining exhibits.
After departing from the pier, you will follow a picturesque coastal route along Gastineau Channel, a beautiful waterway that separates Juneau from Douglas Island. Before long, you will arrive at Gastineau Mill, which was once the world’s largest producer of gold.
When the mill opened in 1913, it featured the very latest mining technologies, some of which you will see on display. A conveyor belt transported the crushed ore from deep in the tunnel to the mill where the gold was extracted. To enhance your understanding of the process and the conditions that the miners endured, you will follow a boardwalk into the 350-foot conveyor tunnel and watch experienced miners demonstrate techniques used to remove the ore from the hard-rock walls.
Upon emerging from the tunnel, you will have the opportunity to pan for gold and garnets, using a simple but effective technique that prospectors relied on. If you strike pay dirt, it is yours to keep.
Afterwards, you may browse the exhibits at the mill, which include the world’s only operating John Peterson Stamp Mill. The equipment works by pounding rather than grinding ore to extract valuable minerals. You can also expect to see the first steam locomotive in Alaska and enjoy a bit of time in the gift shop.
Note: Dress in layers, as temperatures underground can be cool. less

Meander through Tongass National Forest as you explore the Moraine Ecology Trail and the Steep Creek Trail - the latter of which offers multiple views of wild sockeye salmon during the mid to late summer months. ... moreCruise along the picturesque coast of Dixon Cove while learning about the ecosystem and then relax at a beach club and watch a cultural performance by the local Garifuna people.
After departing from the pier, you will soon cruise along the beautiful coast of Dixon Cove in a covered boat. You will notice that the shore is rimmed with mangroves, woody trees with leggy roots that are exposed during low tide. Mangroves have adapted to the tidal conditions and are able to survive in the salty, oxygen-poor soil.
As you cruise along, the narrator will explain how mangroves protect the shoreline from erosion and provide a rich habitat for various animals. The intricate root system creates a safe haven for fish, especially small fish that would otherwise be preyed on.
Following the cruise around the cove, you will pause for photos at an overlook that offers extraordinary views of the tropical landscape and turquoise waters beyond. You might also browse the stands of local handicrafts.
Afterwards, you will visit a beach club where you can enjoy the amenities as you please. You might stretch out on lounge chair and bask in the sun, stroll along the shore and relax in the shade while gazing out at the magnificent scenery.
To enhance your understanding of the local Garifuna culture, you will be treated to a folkloric performance of songs and dances that has changed little over the centuries. The Garifunas will also offer tasty samples of their traditional foods.

Experience the Mayan Reality on a cultural adventure that will both educate and delight you. Many visitors think of the Mayans as an ancient civilization that disappeared long ago, but the fact is that while many other indigenous groups have vanished or been absorbed into the general population, the Mayan culture, customs, language and beliefs remain strong on the Yucatan Peninsula, even today. On this tour you’ll witness the reality that faces these remarkable people as their ancient culture collides with and blends into the modern world. Begin your adventure in a small, contemporary Mayan community built up around the remains of an ancient Mayan settlement and visit one of the fascinating ruins located right in the middle of town.
Follow your guide into an authentic Mayan house where you’ll learn about the local food and the ancient medicines. You’ll hear about the sacred Mayan tree and its role in the cosmos as well as legends, lore and prophesies written in the Mayan calendar. If you’ve visited any Mayan ruin or are remotely interested in the first people that populated the Americas, then you’ll be surprised, fascinated and left with a new-found respect for this long-lived culture and the legacy they leave here in Costa Maya.
