Gain an understanding of the lives of the First Nations people at a replica 19th-century village and in a forest where they still harvest medicinal plants. Tlingit and Haida guides will share their cultures with you in the village clan house in Totem Bight State Park. The colorful totem poles throughout the village are carved with animal figures that reflect the myths and legends of the indigenous people. For instance, the raven is often portrayed in stories as a trickster and is said to be capable of changing its form at will. You will delve deeper into the culture while walking a woodlands trail at Connell Lake. The guides will point out and describe edible plants such as Labrador tea, bearded lichen, and fireweed. They will also show you how spiny devil’s club is carefully harvested to use as fishhooks, tattoo ink and even as a natural medicine for arthritis. A snack of local foods follows.
