After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive inland to the magnificent ruins at Dzibilchaltun. Until the arrival of the Spanish, the Mayans lived here for about 3,000 years. The site is considered to be the longest functioning city of the Mayan world.
Archaeologists have found thousands of structures here, although not all of them have been excavated. The name Dzibilchaltun translates to “place with writings on the stones,” and these messages reflect life in the ancient world.
Of all the buildings, the Temple of the Seven Dolls is the most impressive, certainly with regard to astronomy. The temple is oriented so that the doorways fill with light as the sun rises on the spring and fall equinoxes, to mark the planting and harvesting seasons.
During excavation, seven dolls were found in the temple and are now displayed in an on-site museum. Other artifacts include stone tablets, Spanish armor and items from the Catholics who later tried to convert the inhabitants to Catholicism. A 16th-century church made with stones from various buildings also lies in ruins on the grounds.
After exploring Dzibilchaltun, you will have the opportunity to take a refreshing swim in a nearby cenote, a natural sinkhole that formed centuries ago when limestone on the surface collapsed, exposing the groundwater underneath. Following this unforgettable adventure, you will rejoin your coach and return to the pier.
