After departing from the pier, you will drive due south to Merida, the capital of the Yucatan state. Founded in 1542 on the site of ancient Maya city, Merida is sometimes known as the “White City” because so many of the buildings were constructed with white limestone.
Driving along the fashionable, tree-lined Paseo de Montejo, you will see some of these iconic buildings, which include 19th-century mansions and cultural sites such as the ornate Palacio Canton anthropology museum. After pausing for photos at a monument adorned with intricate carvings that reflect the city’s history, you will continue to the Santa Ana art district.
The streets in this neighborhood are lined with galleries, museums and historical churches. Of particular note is the 16th-century church with pyramidal spires that was built on a former Mayan temple platform.
Following this overview of Merida, you will delve deeper into the city’s charms on a walking tour that begins in Plaza Grande, the heart of downtown. Highlights include one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas, Casa de Montejo, once the home of the city’s founder, who coined the term “White City”, Museo de Arte Popular of Merida and the Museum of Modern Art (MACAY).
Finally, you will enjoy approximately one hour of free time to have a bite to eat or shop for merchandise such as collectibles, ceramics and traditional clothing before returning to the pier.
