George Inlet Lodge Crab Cake Expedition

    Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Alaska

    Duración 3 hs.

    OVERVIEW

Travel along a wonderfully scenic highway to the historical George Inlet Lodge, where a chef will demonstrate how best to prepare crab cakes, which you will later enjoy for lunch. The road to the lodge winds through the wilds of Revillagigedo Island and passes an old sawmill and several salmon canneries that will offer a glimpse into the area’s past. Once you reach the waterfront lodge – which was originally a cannery bunkhouse – the attention will turn to food, especially seafood caught in the chilly depths of the surrounding sea. While the chef prepares your crab cakes according to a classic local recipe and recounts entertaining stories about Alaskan fishing and crabbing, you will be served a garden-fresh salad and half a Dungeness crab as an appetizer. The crab cakes will be served hot off the griddle and followed by a slice of creamy cheesecake topped with blueberries, another Alaska specialty.

Wildlife Cruise, Oyster Farm & Tasting

    Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Alaska

    Duración 3 hs.

Discover how Alaska’s cold, nutrient-rich waters are ideal for growing oysters and kelp by touring a floating farm and then sampling both sustainable products. The tour offers a unique and very exclusive experience with local guides and a maximum of 14 guests. After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque coastal drive along the Tongass Narrows to Bonfire Bay. From here, you will cruise to Clover Pass, all the while watching for humpback whales, seals and sea lions, which frequent these pristine waters. Be sure to look overhead too, as eagles are also abundant. Upon arriving at Hump Island Oyster Company’s floating oyster farm, you will tour the family-owned floating facility. The deep, nutrient-rich tidal waters of Clover Pass are ideal for farming oysters in trays suspended from cedar floats. The oysters are nurtured as they grow from thumbnail size to market size, and as you will discover it’s a fascinating process. The company was also the first in Alaska to grow kelp at a tour site, another sustainable endeavor only possible because of the bay’s extraordinary water conditions. To delve even deeper into the challenges of aquaculture, your guide will explain the threats to the industry along with the sustainable operation. Next, your inner-child will be delighted with our on-site touch tank featuring critters from the local waters. Make sure to bring your camera as the views are amazing offering great photo opportunities. Still, there is no better way to understand how conditions affect oysters and kelp than to taste the final products in a true farm to table experience. A sampling will reveal that the plump oysters have a unique briny flavor that finishes with a hint of melon. The kelp harvested in Southeast Alaska is used liberally in products such as salsa and seasonings.

    Need to Know:

Note: Participants must be at least 40 lbs. (to fit lifejacket). Guests must be able to navigate 15 steps onsite to access the full tour. Must also be able to get into a 15-passenger van with assistance of the side rail. Stairs at Oyster Farm & tide dependent ramp are only areas that may be difficult for guests with mobility issues. Wear warm, waterproof layers & sensible shoes for walking on a dock. You do not need to appreciate oysters to have an amazing time on the tour!

    Guided Sea Kayaking

    Bar Harbor, Maine

    Duración 2 1/2 hs.

Admire the glorious sights of Frenchman Bay while paddling a kayak among the forested Porcupine Islands that lie just offshore. Your tandem kayak will be a breeze to maneuver, especially after a few helpful hints from the guide. Be sure to ask about the amusing mnemonic that makes it easy to remember the names of the five islands within the Porcupine archipelago, each of which has its own distinct features. The coast of Burnt Island looks like charcoal ashes, Long Island is the lengthiest and Bald Island was once deforested for grazing livestock. The guide will also provide enlightening commentary about the local geology, history and wildlife, which is considerable. You can expect to see harbor seals, porpoises, cormorants and bald eagles, whose giant stick nests can be seen high in the trees. Another highlight is viewing the opulent summer “cottages” on Frenchman Bay built by the likes of the Rockefellers, Carnegies and Vanderbilts.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Paddle a tandem kayak among the naturally beautiful Porcupine Islands in Frenchman Bay.
    • Look for seals, porpoises and birds such as majestic bald eagles.

    Ibiza, Spain

    Duración 4 hs.

    OVERVIEW

Paddle a kayak off the beautiful southeastern coast of Ibiza and then relax as you please on sheltered Talamanca Beach, where you launched the kayak. Your seaside adventure will begin with an enlightening walk along the shore, during which the guide will describe the vast meadows of Neptune seagrass that you will see growing in the shallow waters. The views will be just as spectacular above the water’s surface as you will paddle past sea caves, pebbly beaches and gorgeous Cap Martinet, perhaps the island’s most affluent residential area. Back on Talamanca Beach, you will be free to enjoy this lengthy stretch of sand at your leisure.

Roots & Essence Of Puerto Plata

    Puerto Plata, República Dominicana

    Duración 5 1/4 hs.

    OVERVIEW

Become immersed in the local culture by interacting with farmers and others that make artisanal products in the surrounding countryside. While visiting nearby factories and farms, you will see an array of traditional items being produced and speak with some of the owners and workers. You can expect to watch artisans make bon bons with molasses from sugar cane and chocolates from cocoa beans grown using sustainable farming practices.
