OVERVIEW

Observe the wonders underwater through the transparent bottom of your kayak while paddling through the sheltered waters off Ely’s Harbour in the West End. After a brief orientation to ensure that you maximize the experience, you will ease into a two-person kayak and paddle off into the harbor’s typically calm and clear waters. You will glide past shores lined with environmentally friendly mangroves, pause to admire the dramatically eroded cliff known Cathedral Rock and gaze out over Wreck Hill, where the Sea Venture supposedly wrecked in 1609 stranding its English crew and passengers. You may also paddle around the beach-rimmed islands that dot the natural harbor and stop to swim. Even so, the most unusual part of this adventure is watching the marine life through the kayak’s clear bottom. Get an introduction to Bermuda’s marine life by snorkeling. This shoreline cruise takes you to the pristine Sea Gardens, and the shipwreck of the Vixen, a fantastic habitat for a variety of fish and other marine life. This jet-powered, glass bottom boat allows you to view it all, up close, in safe, dry comfort. Departing the reef, you’ll pause at the nearby sea grass beds, where you may spot a few of the many transient turtles.

Then, you’ll head for one of the many shoreline snorkel sites that line the western side of the island, where your boat will set anchor. Walk the cobblestone streets of thoroughly charming St. George, the oldest inhabited town of English origin in the New World. Because of that distinction, UNESCO named St. George a World Heritage site and it is well worth exploring. The guide will elaborate on the town’s intriguing past as you tour one landmark after another, beginning by pausing at Tucker House, a family home that remains virtually untouched since being built in 1750. You will then learn about the origins of the island and view the interior of the Towne Hall. The Mitchell House was built even earlier and is now a museum full of extraordinary artifacts to be viewed up close. As you explore the interior of The State House, you will hear details about Bermuda’s Parliament, which met there for nearly 200 years until Bermuda’s capital moved to Hamilton. Panoramic views of bustling Hamilton Harbour and the Great Sound provide an inspiring backdrop for the most breathtaking 18 holes on the island. Designed in 2002 by renowned golf course architect Algie M. Pulley Jr. the Belmont Hills Golf Course is a magnificent showcase of Bermuda’s natural beauty. Featuring 6,100 yards of strategically laid out bunkers, multiple water hazards, multi-tiered greens and slender fair-ways, this world-class layout offers a challenging test for players of all handicaps. Green fees and shared cart included, transportation is not.

After departing from the pier in an open-air train trolley, you will soon arrive in the heart of the Royal Naval Dockyard. Known as the “Gibraltar of the West,” the dockyard played a vital role in War of 1812 and both World Wars. As you ride the trolley through the streets, the conductor will entertain you with colorful anecdotes and fascinating facts about the history and architecture of the dockyard. Along the way, you will pass the Royal Navy Cemetery, which dates back to 1812. Other points of interest include Lagoon Park, whose mangroves support a thriving population of birds, and Somerset Village, a residential area on Somerset Island that was settled centuries ago.

The tour ends back at the pier. However, as an alternative, the conductor will drop you at Clock Tower Mall to browse the shops and then you may return to the pier later on your own.

Explore the geological wonders and eerie formations in Crystal Caves and then spend hours relaxing at a series of beaches linked by footpaths and surrounded by a nature reserve.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely tender ride to St. George’s Island, the northernmost point of hook-shaped Bermuda. A short scenic drive will bring you to Crystal Caves, which were discovered in 1907 when a teenager tried to retrieve his cricket ball from a hole and found it led to a huge series of caverns.

You will have the opportunity to explore the wonders underground, which include a crystal-clear lake and a profusion of white stalactites eerily illuminated for added drama. Parts of the caves are accessed along a pontoon boardwalk that floats atop the lake, allowing a closer look at the geological formations underwater. As an alternative, you may remain above ground and meander the gardens and browse the gift shop.
