OVERVIEW

Behold some of the island’s most unusual geothermal attractions and enjoy a relaxing foot bath in the mineral-rich waters at a hot spring. Although major volcanic eruptions are rare on Hokkaido Island, the effects of centuries of volcanic activity are ever-present. Lake Mashu is a fine example as an eruption created this crater lake about 2,000 years old. As you gaze down on the lake – which the indigenous Ainu people hold sacred – you may be stunned by the clarity of the water. You will enjoy a close-up view of an active volcano while walking about the foothills of Mount Iozan, where sulfurous steam constantly spews from vents in the ground, forming lumps of crystallized sulfur. The geothermal activity is more contained at Kawayu Onsen, a hot spring quality is of strong sulphuric hydrogen, a rare phenomenon in Hokkaido, which acts as an antibacterial agent.
