Matsuyama Japanese Garden

OVERVIEW

Stroll through the immensely beautiful Ninomaru Historic Site Garden at Matsuyama Castle and browse a collection of retro-looking stores in its shadow. The garden blankets the castle hill and is divided into two very distinct areas. Citrus trees and flowers dominate the northern section, while a tranquil water garden is the main feature in the southern section. Both exude a contemplative atmosphere that you will find wonderfully relaxing. Be sure to notice the foundations of a palace built by a feudal lord and the ancient well that was discovered during an excavation. A short walk downhill will bring you to the Matsuyama Ropeway Shopping Street, a collection of stylish boutiques that carry upscale merchandise. Soft, fluffy and highly absorbent Imabari towels are probably the most sought-after items. Products made with milkan – a type of mandarin orange – are also big draws. You can even drink milkan juice straight from a faucet.
