Scenic La Gomera

OVERVIEW

Gain a remarkably complete understanding of La Gomera’s cultural and geological history in villages where traditional ways are still practiced and at Roque de Agando, a soaring volcanic vent that is so iconic it has become a revered symbol of the island. More natural wonders await you farther inland as you pass through several mountain villages, including El Cercado. Although beautiful, this village is known more for its pottery, which is made from a clay that requires nearly of month preparation before the finished work can be fired in a kiln. If you see two-winged ceramic pieces, they are used only for milking goats. Continuing on toward the island’s west coast, you will visit Laguna Grande, where you will enjoy a demonstration of Silbo, a pre-Hispanic language of whistles that UNESCO has declared an Intangible World Heritage. The earliest inhabitants of the Canary Islands created the bird call-like whistles to communicate over steep gorges that couldn’t be physically crossed.
