OVERVIEW

Visit two temple complexes on densely wooded Mount Koya, a sacred site where Shingon Buddhism was introduced to Japan. Monk and poet Kōbō-Daishi founded this sect of Buddhism in the early 9th century and he is buried at Okunoin Temple. To reach his mausoleum – where he is said to be in a state of eternal meditation – you will follow a stone path that winds about a mile through a forest of mossed-covered cedars. Along the way, you will see the graves of some Japan’s most famous historical figures, including feudal lords and royalty. Although entering the mausoleum is forbidden, you will likely see pilgrims leaving offerings outside of it. You may also independently explore Kongobuji, the main temple of Shingon Buddhism. Rituals and religious ceremonies are held in many of the room,s which are named for the paintings on their doors. If you prefer a guided tour to exploring on your own, that option is available.
