Behold the natural attractions of Cephalonia, including those beneath the surface, such as the Drogarati Cave and subterranean Melissani Lake.

Departing from the pier, you'll drive toward the eastern shore of Cephalonia, the largest Ionian island. Arriving at the Drogarati Cave, you'll descend a flight of stairs into a large cavern which is lighted for dramatic effect. Stalactites hang from the ceiling like jagged curtains, and ancient stalagmites reach up from the rocky floor. The colors are predominately red, orange, yellow and white, from the iron content in the rock and the layers of chalk and limestone.

Although estimated to be 100 million years old, the cave wasn't discovered until about 300 years ago when a violent earthquake opened an entrance. Inside the cave's Chamber of Exaltation, the acoustics are considered near perfect, and concert events are often held in its voluminous interior. Even the famed opera soprano, Maria Callas, sang here.

Continuing on, you will travel in a northerly direction, passing the town of Sami en route to the renowned Melissani Lake. This underground phenomenon looks absolutely magical in the shafts of light that come from 100 feet above, where parts of the ceiling collapsed decades ago. You'll enter the lake by small boat, paddled in so it hardly disturbs the surface of the water, which is a brackish mix of saltwater from the Ionian Sea and freshwater that originated back in Argostoli and then flowed across the island. The stalactites hanging from the ceiling here are estimated to be at least 20,000 years old.

Afterwards, you'll return to Argostoli via a picturesque coastal route that offers spectacular views across the strait to the island of Ithaca, and further along, Myrtos and its dramatic, sheer white cliffs.

Immerse yourself in Cretan history by touring a 16th-century monastery in the countryside and neighboring Rethymno, a town of Venetian origin.

Depart from the pier and drive east onto a fertile plain where the acclaimed Arkadi Monastery was built in 1587. Constructed of honey-colored stone in a Renaissance style, the monastery has played a significant role in Cretan history. It has long been a pilgrimage site and a symbol of resistance after being attacked by Turkish troops in 1866. Many of the items from that conflict, including weapons and military banners, are proudly displayed in the monastery’s small museum. There are also a number of religious objects, the highlight being a 17th-century vestment embroidered in gold that depicts Christ and the 12 disciplines.

After visiting the monastery, you will drive to nearby Rethymno, a coastal city with an abundance of restored buildings from the 16th century. The harbor is Venetian, the streets narrow and charming, and the history rich.

While exploring, you might see Rimondi Fountain in Platanos square, several beautiful mosques, and the fragrant municipal gardens. The Fortezza castle dominates the landscape as it has since 1590, when it was built to protect Rethymno from pirates and Turks. Following your guided walking tour, you’ll have some free time to further explore on your own before returning to the pier.

A beautiful drive along the east coast of Rhodes to Lindos will take you past picturesque little villages and through a splendid landscape of orange and lemon groves, gnarled olive trees, and lovingly tended vineyards.

An ancient Doric town, Lindos is dominated by a magnificent acropolis, located atop a strategic hill overlooking the bay. You may walk to the summit or hire a donkey to take you most of the way. The views are absolutely breathtaking, especially of the waterscape below where St. Paul is said to have landed in 58 A.D. Other highlights of the famed archaeological site are the ruins of a walled fortress built in the 15th century and the remains of the ancient Temple of the Lindian Athena. It was was consecrated to the goddess Athena and also named for Lindia, a pre-Hellenic divinity.

Upon descending from the acropolis, you can meander freely through the narrow streets and past clusters of whitewashed houses that lend Lindos its distinct look. A haunt of artists for years, the village also boasts a myriad of shops carrying locally made jewelry, leather goods and ceramics.

Travel by small boat across the serene, blue-green waters of an underground lake, and then savor traditional Greek meze at a waterfront restaurant.

Depart from the pier and enjoy a lovely ride across Cephalonia, an island long known for its unusual geological formations. In particular, there's Melissani Lake, an underground body of water that was created thousands of years ago. You'll enter the lake by small boat, paddled in so it hardly disturbs the surface of the water, which is a brackish mix of saltwater from the Ionia Sea and freshwater that originated back in Argostoli and then flowed across the island.

The jagged walls of the underground lake rise steeply, causing every sound to echo eerily. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, parts of which collapsed decades ago. The only light comes from 100 feet above, imbuing the cavern-like interior with a soft glow that's absolutely magical. Also known as the Cave of Nymphs, Melissani Lake was named for Melissanthi, a nymph from Greek mythology who drowned herself because the God Pan didn't reciprocate her love.

After touring the underground lake, you'll drive to a delightful waterfront restaurant in the village of Sami for traditional meze, a selection of small dishes that may include kalamari, cheese pie and meatballs. Of course, there's also ouzo, the classic licorice-flavored Greek liqueur. It can be served straight or mixed with water, which will turn the ouzo cloudy white. Afterwards, you'll transfer back to the pier in Argostoli.

This excursion is an ideal introduction to the city’s major highlights. Reach the natural fortress of the Acropolis, and with your guide you’ll walk up the uneven footpath heading to the summit. Sights include the Propylaea, Temple of Apteros Niki, Erectheum and the Architectural Triumph of the Parthenon. Continue with a city drive and see Constitution Square, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Royal Palace, Hadrian’s Gate and the Old Marble Olympic Stadium.

After lunch, drive along the scenic coastal road which affords splendid views of the Saronic Gulf and takes you through some of Athens' most beautiful suburbs. Arrive at Cape Sounion to visit the Temple of Poseidon, standing some 200 feet above the sea at the edge of a cliff. It is one of the most breathtaking and deeply moving sights in all of Greece. Fifteen of the original 34 columns of the Doric order still stand in majestic splendor.

Ancient history and rich traditions abound in Crete, as you will discover by visiting the excavated palace of the mythological king Minos and the village of Arolithos.

Depart from the pier and settle in for a relaxing drive across northern Crete to Knossos, once the capital of ancient Minoan Crete. The area was first inhabited in the 7th millennium B.C., and its grandeur has been slowly revealed through archaeological excavation. The palace that once stood here was known as the seat of power of the legendary King Minos, and the remains of this UNESCO World Heritage site reflect the glory of former times.

From 1900 to 1931, British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans supervised the excavation of the palace complex and surrounding area, and you’ll see firsthand some of the treasures he uncovered. There are royal quarters, shrines, a royal villa, workshops, banquet halls and other preserved monuments from the Minoan civilization.

Continuing on, you will drive to Arolithos, a modern recreation of a traditional Cretan village. Although Arolithos wasn’t inaugurated until 1988, it looks centuries older. Stone buildings, cobbled walkways, arched entries and other architectural touches lend the village an air of antiquity. To add to the ambiance, Cretan artisans such as ironsmiths, potters and weavers can be seen creating wonderful handicrafts. An abundance of antique art objects, gathered throughout Crete, are displayed in Arolithos’ alluring cultural museum.

Following your museum tour, you will have time for shopping and to enjoy a traditional Cretan lunch and folkloric show before returning to the pier.

See how Argostoli has flourished since the 1953 earthquake by visiting a largely spared monastery, an esteemed winery and a village that has been almost completely rebuilt.

Your tour commences with a brief drive inland to the St. Andrews Monastery, which was founded in the 16th century. It's one of the few buildings around the capital of Argostoli to survive the earthquake of 1953. Ironically, the earthquake had one positive effect; it cracked the monastery's walls and ceiling, exposing ancient frescoes that are now considered the island's greatest artistic treasures. Still, their significance is often eclipsed by a bizarre relic housed at the monastery that is alleged to be the sole of St. Andrew's right foot.

Next, you'll tour the nearby Robola winery, which produces a rare variety of wines using white Robola grapes that have thrived on the island since the time of Homer. Some of the winery's most famous vintages include the iconic white Robola of Kefalonia, a delicate Melambus and a dry, ruby-colored Linos. All of the wines have a distinct taste that reflects Argostoli's mild climate and predominately limestone soil.

Continuing on, you'll visit Kourkoumelata village, much of which was rebuilt after the earthquake. Financed largely by a local family of Greek shipping magnates, the reconstruction included homes, government buildings and a new cultural center. Despite its relative newness, Kourkoumelata has retained its lovely rural charm. Following some free time here to stroll about and admire the sweeping views of the sea, you'll rejoin your coach and travel back to Argostoli, making a brief photo stop at the Castle of St. George en route.
