Explore the Mayan ruins at San Gervasio and toast the adventure with an enlightening tequila tasting. Although the ruins are comparatively small, they are significant as the site was once a pilgrimage destination. Worshippers came from all over the Yucatan peninsula to honor Ixchel, the Maya goddess of the moon, love and fertility. Excavations that began in the 1800s have unearthed several archaeologically important structures, including a square vaulted tomb, a large sanctuary known as the Upper House and a temple with red handprints on some of the interior walls. Centuries-old white stone roads and paths connect many of the buildings. The guide will describe the Mayan culture that thrived at San Gervasio until about 1600, when smallpox from the Spanish conquistadors devastated the population.
