Discover the acclaimed natural beauty of Ishigaki at two of its most panoramic destinations: hilltop Tamatorizaki and pristine Kabira Bay.
Settle in for a scenic drive around ladle-shaped Ishigaki Island, a natural paradise of secluded coves, beautiful beaches and subtropical vistas rarely associated with Japan. As you drive up the island’s northeast coast, you will soon arrive at Tamatorizaki, an elevated viewpoint that is considered one of Ishigaki’s most beautiful spots.
From the observation deck at the top, you will see the Pacific Ocean on one side of the island and the East China Sea on the other. Wildflowers are typically in bloom year-round, lush palms rim the sugar-white beaches, and mountainous Hirakubo peninsula rises in the distance. It’s a perfect setting for photos and to embrace the island’s laid-back attitude.
Continuing on toward the western side of Ishigaki, you will pass several beach communities before reaching Kabira Bay. Another one of the island’s most picturesque and highly photographed spots, the unspoiled bay is dotted with densely forested islets. In all likelihood, you will see boats in the distance, cruising over the coral reefs in the crystal-clear water and perhaps black pearls being harvested for export. It’s truly breathtaking.
As you travel back to the pier, more gorgeous scenery unfolds along the way.
