OVERVIEW

Browse an extraordinary railway museum and descend into the ancient catacombs that lie beneath Naples, two entirely different eye-opening experiences. The exhibits within the seaside National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa showcase steam locomotives that trace the evolution of Italian rail transport. Although a reproduction, the Bayard locomotive is particularly noteworthy as it powered Italy’s first railway in 1839. You can expect to come away with a greater understanding of the technological and social impact of railways on Italy’s development. The eerily illuminated two-level Catacombs of San Gennaro were used continuously from the early days of Christianity through the 10th century. The upper catacombs contain the crypts of numerous bishops and have become a pilgrimage site. The lower catacombs feature an underground basilica where Mass is still held. For a look at contemporary life in Naples, you will be dropped off in the city center to enjoy free time.

Note: This tour includes extended periods of walking and standing on flat, cobblestone, and uneven surfaces, particularly inside the Catacombs, where lighting is dim and walking paths may be irregular. Long transfers are included at the start and at the end of the tour. This tour is not recommended for guests with visual limitations due to the low lighting in the catacombs, nor for guests who suffer from claustrophobia. The minimum temperature inside the catacombs is 15°C. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the National Railway Museum is not available; on Wednesdays, the San Gennaro Catacombs are not available and will be replaced with a visit to Napoli Sotterranea. It is not recommended for guests with mobility limitations, wheelchairs, scooters, or those who may have difficulty navigating stairs. Weather conditions such as rain, wind, or sun may affect comfort at outdoor venues. Long queues may occur at some locations. Guests must be able to independently board and exit the coach, remain attentive to instructions, and respect meeting times to avoid returning to the ship at their own expense.
