Interact with mushing dogs that pull sleds through the snow and pan for gold like the prospectors in the Klondike Gold Rush. You will participate in these two classic Alaskan activities at a camp near Dyea, a now abandoned town that boomed during the gold rush in the late 1890s. The sled drivers, known as mushers, will describe how the dogs are cared for and trained to maximize their strength and stamina to pull sleds, often competitively in contests such as the grueling 1,000-mile Iditarod. The dogs are spectacular athletes with thick undercoats that protect them from the cold. Questions are encouraged, so feel free to ask the mushers whatever comes to mind. You will also learn to pan for gold, which was discovered in the Klondike in 1896. A year later, as many as 30,000 prospectors poured into the area. The story is fascinating, as is learning to use a sluice box to extract gold from running water.
