Discover how prehistoric people lived in the Norway’s glacial terrain and the effects of recent climate change by browsing exhibits in a hand-carved glacial tunnel.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a wonderfully scenic drive inland, through a pristine valley surrounded by national parks. This breathtaking alpine terrain has changed little over the millennia and looks entirely prehistoric.

In time, you will reach Klimapark, a hauntingly stark park at the foot of Gadhøpiggen, the highest mountain in Norway. As you meander along the outdoor boardwalk on the Juvflye plateau, you will learn about the area’s history, nature and climate change.

You may see an ancient reindeer hunting station that melting ice exposed and a sample of permafrost, which is soil just below the surface that has been permanently frozen for thousands of years. These are just a few examples that show the complexity of life in this harsh terrain, which seems uninhabitable at first glance.

Toward the end of the walkway, you will enter an ice tunnel that has been hand-carved out of a glacier that is estimated to be 6,000 years old. The exhibits within the tunnel will enlighten you further, as they present fascinating details about nearby archaeological digs that have unearthed items such as arrowheads and clothing worn 1,000 years ago.

Renowned Norwegian sculptor Peder Istad designed the ice tunnel, and it is visually stunning. After walking through it, you will return to the pier.
