Go Green- African Penguin Patrol

Cruise to the world's largest colony of African penguins and visit a rehabilitation center that treats injured marine birds in hopes of releasing them back into the wild. The penguins inhabit St. Croix, a rocky island that is almost completely devoid of soil. Although the island offers an excellent natural habitat, the penguins are in decline from environmental risks, oil spills and their eggs being pilfered for human consumption. While observing these endemic penguins, you will likely hear them braying like donkeys, which is why they are also known as jackass penguins. Several species of dolphins, seals and whales frequent these waters, so keep an eye out for them, as well. Following lunch at a local restaurant, you will get a different perspective of the dangers to the penguins and other seabirds by visiting a nearby rehabilitation center. Its veterinarians care for injured birds, orphaned chicks and abandoned eggs, all in hopes of increasing the numbers of African penguins.
